I've upgraded from a Mac G4 10.4.11 to a Mini Mac El Capitan. Is there anything out there like Appleworks 5 or 6 that will work with El Capitan? Why Apple did away with Appleworks was crazy. AppleWorks is an all-in-one Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Database, Graphics Editor, and Presentations tool. The original product was a text-based product for the Apple II. The Apple Macintosh and Windows versions were forked from ClarisWorks in 1998 by Apple. At the time, Apple was under a lot of pressure to have a direct alternative to Microsoft Office. There were serious concerns that Microsoft might pull Microsoft Office for the Macintosh from development.
Mac/Win AppleWorks is completely unrelated to the 1980's Apple II AppleWorks. They simply re-used the name to gain brand recognition. Some of the developers of Apple II AppleWorks developed a Macintosh product that was purchased by Microsoft and became Microsoft Works.
In 2007, Apple discontinued AppleWorks in favor of the iWork productivity suite. AppleWorks for Macintosh was never ported to the Intel CPUs. The last version was 6.x.

After this release Apple II AppleWorks was sold to Claris.
Appleworks Word Processor
Apple II AppleWorks is only related in name to the Macintosh/WindowsAppleWorks. Some of the Apple II developers created a Macintoshoffice suite that was purchased by Microsoft and became MicrosoftWorks.
